Let’s say you want to download Skype on a new machine. You head up to www.skype.com trying to download the desktop application. But the website doesn’t just give you the download link right away. It forces you to login on the website in order to be able to download the application:
However, that login doesn’t have any benefit for the user. Because when he runs the application, he has to login again:
So during this common workflow, user has to login twice which is pointless except probably helping Skype track who has downloaded the application.
The login on the web site is unnecessary. User should simply be offered the download link. He can later login or create an account after installation. Skype probably has a good reason for this weird user flow, but I am sure whatever it is, there must be a way to let the user login only once.
